There are no direct lines to the resort of Chamonix, but it is well known that it is at only 90 km from Geneva, from here connections being easily made. If you are a citizen of the European Union, we may visit Chamonix only by presenting the identity document, the passport being required for the tourists that are not from a EU member state.
The nearest airport is the one in Geneva (Switzerland), which is only 90 km away from Chamonix. The International Airport of Geneva (Geneva International Airport, Switzerland)has connections with most of the important cities of Europe, flying by plane being one of the less costly options considering the low-cost offers that are brought over by ever more air companies. Plane travelling to Chamonix via Geneva has by far the greatest advantages: low prices, a shorter route and avoids crowding. Besides the airport in Geneva, which is only one hour away from the resort, you may as well land in Lyon, Grenoble (France) or Torino (Italy), the difference consisting in the distance to Chamonix, which is somewhat greater. From Geneva airport you may choose more ways to reach Chamonix. With the help of the telephone or the Internet (Rent a car Chamonix) you may rent a car or do the same once you reach the airport. The cars are equipped with everything necessary, but you should also account for the weather conditions, if you want the car equipped with anti skid chains for instance. From Geneva you will reach the border with France in only 15 minutes, and from here all you have to do is to follow the traffic signs that indicate the route to Chamonix. The route is on highway A40, and you'd better have some change on you on the way to pay the two road taxes (approximately 3 Euro each). The rental cars have also the advantage that they may be used beyond the resort, where you may easily travel from one ski slope to another; you don't have to worry about the parking places that are provided abundantly. Another transport means covering the distance between Geneva airport and Chamonix resort, in only 2 hours, is the bus. It has five trips daily (08.00, 11.00, 13.50, 15.45, 18.40) to Chamonix station and such a trip would take out your pockets approximately 30 Euro (much cheaper than a taxi that would cost you 120 euro).
The personal vehicle is a viable alternative to reach Chamonix, the costs of such a trip being relatively small, especially if you choose to travel in the company of some friends. Yet such a trip includes some risks such as the unfavourable weather conditions or crowded roads in the weekend, which may cause unwanted delays. Thus, it would be advisable to equip your car in due time with anti-skid chains, to check whether your insurances are up-to-date and to have the money or valid card to pay the many road taxes you shall in your way. The advantage of the car trip is that it offers flexibility but also the chance to carry more luggage with you.
If you wish to travel by train, prepare for an unforgettable visual show in the Alps. Such a trip may be very tiring in exchange, considering the crowd and thinner air in certain areas of the mountains. The advantage consists in the fact that there is an intercity route Paris - Annecy, whereby you may take the line Saint Gervais/Le Fayet - Vallorcine, onto which there is a stop in Chamonix Mont Blanc railway station.
